What Role Will Hakeem Nicks Play in an Already Crowded Receiver Corps in New Orleans?

On Wednesday, the New Orleans Saints added another veteran to their young roster when they signed free agent wide receiver Hakeem Nicks to a one-year deal. Nicks is only 28 years old, but he has not lived up to his billing, ever since leaving the Giants a few seasons ago. Nicks was a key contributor for the Giants when the team made their magical Super Bowl run in 2011.

During that year, Nicks had the best season of his career as an NFL wide receiver. He hauled in 1,192 receiving yards and seven touchdown receptions. The following years, Hakeem Nicks numbers would take a huge drop which eventually affects his value as a free agent.

He would sign with another Super Bowl contender at the time in the Indianapolis Colts, but was never a factor in the Colts offense. The Saints wide receiver corps is already crowded with players such as Willie Snead, Brandin Cooks, Brandin Coleman and rookie Michael Thomas out of The Ohio State University.

At best, Nicks will play the role of a mentor to the Saints wide receivers that still lack the experience needed to show up in big games. However, if he can stay healthy and regain some of the magic that he had in 2011, quarterback Drew Brees will have another safety blanket to deliver the football to in crunch time.

Another outcome of this signing is that the days could be numbered for wide receiver Brandon Coleman in a Saints uniform. There will not be enough room for all of those receivers to be on the Saints roster all at once.
