If you watched, the video above that was the gruesome injury that 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman suffered against their hated rival the Seattle Seahawks in the 2013 NFC Championship game. Bowman has not stepped on the field ever since. In his absence on the field, the 49ers took a turn for the worse in 2014.
They never recovered from that heartbreaking loss in Seattle. The 49ers slumped to an 8-8 record which resulted in them missing out on the playoffs for the first time during the Jim Harbaugh Era in San Francisco. The following months after Harbaugh left the 49ers organization to pursue the coveted head coaching position, at his alma mater the University of Michigan, a mass exodus hit the 49ers organization swiftly. It began with all-pro linebacker and future Hall of Famer Patrick Willis who retired after playing eight seasons in the National Football League.
The following days after the shocking announcement, linebacker Chris Borland retired as well. With half of the 49ers nucleus gone it leaves NaVorro Bowman as the new leader of the 49ers organization. When he is healthy Bowman is an impact player on the 49ers defense. Even though he is coming off a nasty injury, he will be expected to pick up where Patrick Willis left off as the heartbeat of the San Francisco 49ers.
Even though fans and analyst are not giving the 49ers a chance of contending with the Seahawks, for supremacy in the NFC West. They still have talented players such as Colin Kaepernick and Vernon Davis who can be just as dangerous as any other quarterback to tight end connection in the league today. To see what type of impact NaVorro Bowman had on the 49ers, check out the video below that features the 89-yard interception return for a touchdown, against the Atlanta Falcons in 2013.
That play alone catapulted the 49ers into the playoffs that year. NaVorro Bowman will also play the role of mentor as well, since the 49ers will most likely draft a middle linebacker in the 2015 NFL Draft, as the predecessor for Patrick Willis. If he can stay healthy for the next four to six years then most likely he will be one of the best inside linebackers in the game. When Patrick Willis went down with that nagging foot injury that eventually led to him missing the entire 2014 regular season, it was the nail in the coffin in regards to the 49ers making the playoffs.
Linebacker Ahmad Brooks is a solid player on defense, but he is nowhere near the level of both Lewis and Bowman. It was almost like playing with a double edged sword when both Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman were on the field playing at 100 percent healthy. As the 2015 regular season slowly approaches, NaVorro Bowman will be primed up and ready to lead the 49ers defense into battle with some of the leagues best such as the Cardinals, Packers, and Ravens. This ball club will be better than most think it will in 2015.
