Chip Kelly was fired as San Francisco 49ers head coach two months ago. However, he may not be unemployed for long, according to reports Chip Kelly is the front runner for the vacant offensive coordinator job at Alabama left by Steve Sarkisian.
Sarkisian will be replacing Kyle Shanahan as Falcons offensive coordinator going into the 2017 season. Shanahan recently was named the new head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. There are a lot of benefits of hiring Chip Kelly as an offensive coordinator of the Alabama Crimson Tide.
However, with those benefits, there are some risks as well. Alabama has the perfect quarterback who would excel in Kelly’s system in Jalen Hurts. Chip Kelly’s ability to develop the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback has to be a major selling point if he did indeed meet with Nick Saban a few days ago.
If these talks are real and Saban decides to hire Chip Kelly as an offensive coordinator, they have the potential to become two of the most powerful minds in college football. But, could they coexist with each other? Both Saban and Kelly have massive egos and will not back down from each other.
How will Saban respond when Kelly’s fast-paced offense starts to affect how his vaunted defense performs in football games. According to many football analysts, the reason why Chip Kelly’s failed at the pro-level was that his offense scored at such a fast pace that it hindered how his personnel on the defensive side of the football performed against opposing offenses.
Those are some of the things that Saban must take into account if he decides to hire Chip Kelly. Alabama’s offense was taken to new heights under the guidance of Lane Kiffin, but if Chip Kelly takes over as new offensive coordinator and contributes to winning another National Title for the Crimson Tide, it will go down as another slam-dunk hire for Nick Saban.
