Last season the Green Bay Packers were one game away from making it back to the Super Bowl. They were taken to the woodshed by eventual NFC Champions the Atlanta Falcons by a score of 44-21.
It was clearly evident that the injuries to the Packers roster finally caught with up to them in their matchup against the Falcons. Here is what quarterback Aaron Rodgers had to say after the team’s disappointing loss to the Falcons.
During the press conference interview, Rodgers stated that the Packers needed “reload” and “not rebuild” in 2017. However, did the front office take heed to what Rodgers said and make the necessary moves to make this team better during free agency? So far, they have decided to let tight end, Jarrett Cook to sign with the Oakland Raiders.
The man that will take Cook’s place as the team’s starting tight end will be Super Bowl LI Champion, Martellus Bennett. Bennett will be a great addition to the Packers locker room, but I do not believe that he will be the threat that Cook was in this offense. On the defensive side of the football, they lost veteran Julius Peppers after he decided to return to the Carolina Panthers.
If you paid close attention to the Packers over the past few seasons, it is clearly evident that defense is their Achilles heel. They were torched twice by Colin Kaepernick in the postseason, Marshawn Lynch ran roughshod over them in the 2014-2015 NFC Championship Game and Larry Fitzgerald sealed their playoff faith a year later.
The Packers may have the personnel on their roster to repeat as NFC North Champions once again, but when it comes to the postseason, and they have to face NFC’s best, and they could be in for a rude awakening. On top of that, they might have to worry about teams in their division such as the Detroit Lions and the Minnesota Vikings. Both teams will have their eyes set on dethroning the Packers in 2017.
As of right now, the Green Bay Packers have not done enough to improve their chances of advancing to the Super Bowl next season. However, when you have a guy like Aaron Rogers, there’s always an opportunity to expect the unexpected.
