Recently, Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney made an interesting statement about his former superstar quarterback Deshaun Watson. He stated that if anyone passes on Watson in the upcoming NFL Draft, it would be like passing on Michael Jordan. For those that do not know, the Portland Trailblazers decided to select University of Kentucky center Sam Bowie with the 2nd pick in the 1984 NBA Draft.
Bowie’s career was plagued with injuries, while Jordan became the greatest player in NBA History. Like Jordan, Watson led his team to National Title and had decided to take his talents to the professional level. Areas that you can compare Deshaun Watson to Michael Jordan is his ability to show up in big games.
Watson has had more success against Alabama than any other quarterback in the Southeastern Conference not named Cam Newton or Chad Kelly. In two games against the Crimson Tide Watson has thrown for a total of 825 passing yards and seven touchdown passes. You would think that those numbers would have more scouts at the pro-level intrigued about selecting Watson in this year’s upcoming draft, but they are not.
A lot of scouts are concerned about Watson’s accuracy and his 6’1 frame as an NFL quarterback. Even with those concerns among many scouts, there will be a few teams that will have an interest in selecting Deshaun Watson. I do not see him falling past the first eleven picks in the 2017 NFL Draft. Also, do not be surprised if there’s a team that will make an attempt to move up in the draft to select Watson.
I believe that Deshaun is that good and should be coveted more by teams that need an upgrade at the quarterback position. We know that Watson can perform on the biggest stage like MJ did, but which team will take heed on Swinney’s remarks? Deshaun Watson is going to be great at the next level, but not Michael Jordan great. Pump the brakes just a little Coach Swinney.
